ghost hunting

What draws her out is the promise of a cat

She slips out the backdoor, smart enough to be in thick rubber boots in case her cause pulls her into the back field.  Against the wind and through the honey light of sunset she searches for a ghost.  Chasing rumors & sightings of a small, grey kitten on the property- which she herself has never seen but it doesn't occur to her to doubt.  She places a bowl of food where it was last seen among the sunflowers in the garden.

And in the morning while the rest of the house is still sleeping I hear the back door open as she slips out into the yard. Hunting an idea she blindly loves with all her heart.
